A Place/Pergola in the Sun

Making a nice place... nicer.

This cosy corner is a real sun trap and also happens to be a favourite place for plants and humans to hang out. The plan was to build a pergola to allow a safe climbing area for plants and to provide an idyllic seating area for people.

Rather than go for the traditional square shaped pergolas the idea was to make the most of the adjoining buildings shape and create a fan effect reaching out from a central point.

In this case we bought ourselves a Larch tree trunk (a first) and set that into the ground to be the central pillar.

After a careful cut with a chainsaw we had a level base from which to span out the green oak fan timbers. Each timber follows on from the previous one rotating at 9.8 degrees per time.

Scroll through the slideshow to the right to see some detail photo's.

Once all the timbers were in place it was time to bring back the off-cut from the larch tree which in the meantime had been turned on a lathe to create the top hat capping piece.

The seating area was created from waney edged Douglas Fir slabs milled from a tree on-site last year. The pergola throws some striking shadows on the walls, can't wait to see what it looks like once the plants get up there.

We can create all manner of garden structures and furniture. If you have a space you would like to get more from in your garden, get in touch.
